Linksys wireless access points enable flexible configurations for wireless clients. Turning your access point into a wireless repeater connects it to a second access point through the wireless signal. In doing so, computers connect to that repeater can connect to an Internet connection or other computers connect to the other access point. Only certain Linksys products have this ability by default, but you can unlock this functionality in many Linksys products using free, third-party firmware.

Configuration
Typical configuration within a Linksys access point requires you to change the AP mode. By default, it operates in infrastructure mode, meaning it connects via wire to a network and uses its wireless radio to give connecting clients access to that network. On the WAP54G model, this setting is found under the “Setup” menu. You’ll enter the MAC address of the other wireless access point or router for which it will act as a repeater. After the repeater has been set up, clients can only connect through the wired port on the access point.

Linksys disables the ability to change the AP mode on most of its wireless routers. That does not mean, however, that this functionality is unattainable. You can also change the default Linksys firmware to a third-party solution, such as DD-WRT (see Resources.) DD-WRT replaces the configuration interface of the router and “unlocks” functionality hidden in the Linksys hardware. Among this functionality is a variety of repeater modes. Third-party firmware offering wireless repeater functionality include OpenWRT and Tomato (see Resources.)
Repeater Modes
Not all repeaters are the same. A standard repeater dedicates the wireless frequencies solely to connecting to another access point, allowing computers to connect to the access point only through an Ethernet cable. Repeater bridge mode uses the wireless frequency for communication with another access point and allows wireless clients to connect. This mode is available on virtually all third-party firmware.
Point-to-Point Antenna
Another consideration is the type of antenna. Though the default antenna works perfectly for standard range connections, you can extend the range of the bridge by changing the antenna type. Directional antennas focus the radiating energy of the access point, giving it greater sensitivity in a particular direction. This increased sensitivity means that the radio can connect over larger distances if aimed properly. The WAP54G and many other Linksys models with external antennas use the RP-TNC antennas.
